Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: What Micropigmentation Artists Need to Know
Semi-permanent makeup. Scalp micropigmentation. Medical tattooing. Microblading. Whatever your specialism — if you’re self-employed in the micropigmentation world, a big change is coming to the way you handle your taxes. And the sooner you know about it, the better.
So, What Is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is a government initiative that changes how self-employed people report their income to HMRC. Instead of filling in one Self Assessment tax return at the end of the year, you’ll need to keep digital records throughout the year and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software.
Think of it less like a one-off filing and more like checking in with HMRC four times a year, with a final summary at the end.
When Does It Apply to Me?
Here’s the rollout:
- April 2026 — If your self-employed income is over £50,000 per year
- April 2027 — If your income is over £30,000 per year
- April 2028 — If your income is over £20,000 per year
If you’re running a busy micropigmentation studio, especially if you’re combining treatments, product sales, and training courses, you could hit these thresholds sooner than you think.
Why Does This Affect Micropigmentation Artists Specifically?
The micropigmentation industry is full of talented, hardworking self-employed professionals. Many are sole traders juggling clients, suppliers, training days, and social media, all while running a fully booked appointment schedule. Tax admin often gets pushed to the bottom of the list.
But MTD for IT isn’t going to wait. And the way most people in this industry currently manage their finances, saving receipts in a folder, totting everything up in January, hoping for the best, simply won’t cut it anymore.
Here’s what changes day-to-day:
You’ll need to keep digital records from the start. That means tracking your income and expenses as you go, using software that’s compatible with HMRC’s MTD system. Spreadsheets alone won’t count.
You’ll submit updates four times a year. Each quarter, you’ll send a summary of your income and outgoings to HMRC. It doesn’t replace your year-end summary; it’s in addition to it.
You’ll need to think about which income counts. If you earn from treatments, sell aftercare products, run training days, or have income from multiple sources, all of this needs to be tracked correctly. It can get complicated quickly.
What Counts as Income?
This is where micropigmentation professionals can sometimes get caught out. Your taxable income isn’t just what you charge for treatments. It can include:
- Treatment fees (semi-permanent makeup, scalp micropigmentation, medical tattooing, microblading, etc.)
- Sales of aftercare kits, pigments, or other products
- Income from courses, workshops, or masterclasses you run
- Any other self-employed income you earn
Keeping all of this clearly separated and recorded digitally, from day one of the tax year, is exactly what MTD for IT requires.
What Software Do I Need?
You’ll need to use HMRC-recognised software that supports MTD for Income Tax. There are a growing number of options available, ranging from full accounting platforms to simpler apps designed for sole traders. A bookkeeper, like Bluebells Bookkeeping, can help you choose the right one for how you work. Whether that’s something you update on your phone between appointments, or a system that links directly to your business bank account.
The key is getting set up before your start date, not scrambling at the end of the first quarter.
Don’t Leave It Until the Last Minute
One of the biggest mistakes self-employed people make with tax changes like this is assuming they have plenty of time and then suddenly realising they don’t. Getting your records in order, choosing the right software, and understanding what you need to submit takes a bit of upfront effort. But once it’s set up properly, it genuinely makes life easier.
Quarterly updates also mean you’ll have a much clearer picture of your finances throughout the year, no nasty surprises in January, no scrambling to find old receipts, and no guessing what your tax bill might be.
